Review by Maria Day

Annie Laurie is a beautiful and haunting album by the talented singer George Gaskin. The album features a collection of traditional Scottish folk songs, including the titular track "Annie Laurie," which Gaskin performs with a delicate and emotional touch. His voice is rich and expressive, perfectly suited to the melancholic melodies and poetic lyrics of these timeless songs.

Throughout the album, Gaskin is accompanied by a variety of instruments, including the violin, guitar, and piano, which add depth and texture to the already stunning vocal performances. The arrangements are simple and understated, allowing Gaskin's voice to shine through and capture the listener's attention.

One standout track on the album is "The Banks o' Doon," a beautiful ballad that showcases Gaskin's ability to convey deep emotion through his singing. His voice is full of longing and sadness as he sings of lost love and broken promises, and the haunting melody lingers long after the song has ended.

About George Gaskin

Irish-American vocalist (tenor). Became one of the most popular singers the United States in the 1890s and was nicknamed the "Silver Voiced Irish Tenor". He began making records at least as early as 1892 for the New Jersey Phonograph Co. He soon had extensive lists with all of the phonograph companies, specializing in the latest popular hits, with a few oddities thrown in (including sacred selections and even grand opera). His strident, piercing voice was fine for the early days, but unsuitable for the improving technology of the early 1900's, and his career petered out shortly after the turn of the century. He attempted a comeback on Pathe in 1916, without success. Born: February 16, 1863, Belfast, County Antrim, United Kingdom Died: December 14, 1920, New York, NY, United States
