The singer's name is really Robert Farrant. I guess the record company wanted to use something it thought was snappier, so for some reason they chose the name of a character in a British sailor's song dating back to the 18th Century. Robert Shafto was a real politician of the day. It's not clear whether the song existed previously, but some sources say that it includes a reference to the real Shafto's having dumped one heiress for another, and his supporters added a verse to use as a campaign song. Regardless, I like She's My Girl a heck of a lot better!

I have known the epic dude for 26 years! Some of them lost, the time gone will be my song.

Saw him on a package tour in 64/or 65? With the headliner Gene Pitney, The Kinks Gerry and the Pacemakers were on the tour too

I used to live in the same road as Bobby Shafto AKA Robert Farrent and knew him in the 50's and 60's. He had an older brother and a younger sister called Ann. I think he was discovered by Lionel Bart when he was working in his offices. Is he still around?

I was just thinking about this song last night. I kept hearing the chorus in my head but couldn't remember the artist but I could remember the record label "Rust" ... I then found this on you tube. I had no idea that Bobby Shafto was British. I can remember at the time ( I was 11 years old) that shortly after the Beatles broke in the US, there was a wave ( British Invasion) of all these artists and songs on American AM  Radio ( especially NYC radio). Often times American producers were trying to capture that "British" sound but the Brits were still producing stuff that sounded "American" so we, as listeners, often couldn't tell who was from where especially because British artists didn't sing with an accent ..

Outstanding tune from the Early British Invasion.  Bobby was a one-man "Dave Clark 5."  This received good radio play in the Washington, D.C., area, but as others have said, there was just way too much competition in 1964-65 to easily make your way into the Billboard Top Ten.  I had not heard this in 45 years until I encountered this upload.  Thank you!

Wow a blast from the past.  Though I still have a signed copy of the single (plus others) Knew Bob well in the early 60's even ran a fan club for him until I emigrated to Australia 1964 and over time lost touch with him (he wasn't one to write often) Pleased to hear he is still around. bobby shafto was one of those man-made, manufactured pop singers of the sixties.
he was supposed to make a million quid/pounds within a few years.
he disappeared without trace.
just like those brain-dead manmade pop "groups" of today. those stupid boybands.
whatever happened to progressive rock? anyone remember?

I can't thank you enough for uploading this. I thought I was the only one in North America who remembered this classic. I loaned my 45 rpm to a friend in '71 and never saw it again!

Great Song, just too many other excellent singles around at the same time for this one to get into the Top 20. Thanks for bringing back a great memory!

This is a fantastic song that just got lost in a sea of bigger artists. I was sat in a café in Blackpool in the early sixties and some girls in the café suddenly screamed its Bobby Shafto and ran after him down the street. I suppose he was performing at one of the piers.
This song was a very minor hit in the USA for him and it did deserve to do better in the UK
thanks for sharing this record, like others have commented after the original airplay I have never heard again
