Review by Luke Spry

Aufklärung's Di La TempestaLOscuro Piacere is a dark and brooding album that will leave listeners feeling both unsettled and deeply satisfied. The Italian band's blend of post-punk, shoegaze, and industrial influences creates a sense of foreboding that permeates every track. The haunting vocals of lead singer Federico Gatti are particularly effective in conveying the album's sense of existential dread.

The album's opening track, "Il Silenzio Del Mare," sets the tone with its slow, driving rhythm and atmospheric guitar work. From there, the album moves through a series of moody, introspective tracks, each one building on the themes of the previous one. Highlights include the industrial-tinged "La Fine Del Mondo," the shoegaze-inspired "La Pioggia," and the hauntingly beautiful "Il Buio."

While the album's overall mood is undeniably dark, there are moments of lightness and beauty that shine through. The dreamy "Nebbia" is a standout, with its shimmering guitar work and ethereal vocals. Similarly, "La Bellezza Del Nulla" balances its ominous lyrics with a soaring chorus that is both uplifting and cathartic.

About Aufklärung

Italian progressive rock band formed in 1990 from members of a band called The Eclipse, and the prototype of Aufklärung. The main lineup for the band would consist of Fabio Guadalupi on guitars, Marco Mancarella on keyboards, Michele Martello on guitars, Massimo Migini on drums, Luciano Rubini on bass, and Edoardo Lecci with vocals and flute. The name translates almost literally as enlightenment (naturally, this is a concept someone with the nickname of bhikkhu can get on board with). It also specifically refers to a philosophical/social/political movement that swept through Europe in the eighteenth century. Generally it is referred to as the Age of Reason. In Germany it was called Aufklärung. The band says that this movement was a cultural break, and they are making a similar break by revisiting a musical movement from the past. However, why a group of Italian guys chose the German form of this term is anyone's guess.
